Is silence a sound?
One morning on the way to school, I had Simon and Garfunkel playing in the car. The "Sound of Silence" was on and the lyrics hung heavy in the car.
Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
The song ended just as we arrived at my son's school and before he jumped out (in his usual way) he paused and asked - "Is silence a sound?"
"What do you think?" I asked.
"I don't know, I want to think about this." He shut the door and walked away.
Later that afternoon - I picked him up from school and he announced:
"Silence is a sound. My science teacher told me."
He then asked, "Can you play that song again?"
Later that night - he downloaded "The Sound of Silence" it is (to this day) one of his all time favorite songs.
Mine too.
Amazing what happens within the sound of silence.

Oh, I love this. My children are a million miles away from silence (except in the dark of night when they sleep, thank goodness), but I'd like to think that someday we can have a deeper connection on the way to school, listening to Simon and Garfunkel.

@jgroeber - So thankful for the deeper connections on the way to school! :) Thank you for your comments. Cheers to time in the car, Simon and Garfunkel and the sound of silence.
Bright child. Lovely post. Children are such a blessing, especially for those who didn't get any!
Like your ideas.
