The color of butterfly wings ...

I had a very sweet experience today ... It involves a song, a missionary son (who is far away) and the tender mercy of the Lord.

I thought about my son all week - he was on my mind. I prayed for him and hoped that all was well. This is the first week I did not receive a letter via the mailbox - so I knew he must have been really busy.

last night, I felt impressed to blog about one of my favorite songs! It's a song I sang as a child at church and I often sang it to my children (when they were young - before they went to sleep).

I always liked the line in the song about the butterfly wings! :) (He did too!)
It brought back some fun memories of 'putting our kids to bed' and the nighttime songs ...

He gave me my eyes that I might see
The color of butterfly wings.
He gave me my ears that I might hear
The magical sound of things.
He gave me my life, my mind, my heart:
I thank him rev'rently
For all his creations, of which I'm a part.
Yes, I know Heav'nly Father loves me.

I sent my Missionary son an email this morning and felt impressed to share the lyrics above as part of the letter.

Here is the response I received from him this morning -

I was singing that song last night before bed! It is such a sweet song. I have honestly thought a lot about you too mom over the course of this journey. I think I just needed to leave before I could truly appreciate all that you do for me and all that you are. Thanks for being such an awesome mom.

So sweet - it made me cry ... :)

Happy Monday - I hope you too, will see the hand of the Lord in your life today!
Our little moments matter ... especially to HIM.

Happy 44th birthday – Travis!

It wasn't the digital era - I only have a few, precious photos of my brother ... However, I have a million memories locked in my mind (I visit them often) and I smile and remember a life that will always touch mine! Happy birthday big brother - I love you! ‪#‎Lich‬

Today is my brother’s birthday. He died when I was 15, it was the summer before my sophomore year. He was 17 – just about to enter his senior year of high school.

I’ll never forget the day he died. Time stood still. My world changed forever. I won’t lie and say that it was an easy time getting through the rest of my high school years. In fact, it was very challenging. I can attribute four things to pulling me through that time – the cross country team, my friends & family and a loving Heavenly Father who gave me hope and patience and a desire to keep ‘running’.

It’s been 28 years since he passed away. I find myself reflecting today, on his birthday, full of gratitude and love for the journey it’s been. I’m a different person today because of his life and death. I am stronger. I am filled with more faith. I have more love to share. I have empathy, understanding and a desire to live every single day with joy, enthusiasm and with a loving heart. I know the Lord has his purposes in all things.
My brother’s life was short but wonderful. His race was not long … but important.

We all have a race to run.

I thank Heavenly Father every day for blessing me with a big brother who made me laugh, try, reach and believe!

And today I celebrate his life and the wonderful memories we shared!

Happy birthday Travis!

My black socks are on. I’m still ‘running’ forward and think of you often.

I love you,
Little Lich

A paper snowman ...

Love the look on this snowman's face ... He's looking forward and enjoying the 'snowy' moment.
Reminds me to do the same ... (no snow yet but when it hits - I'll be out catching the snowflakes too).

Happy Tuesday! Enjoy whatever is 'falling' from your sky ...

Wake up and be happy ...

"To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy…is to set our own conditions to the events of each day. To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Don't miss the magic ...

(A magical afternoon - sledding with my family)

During the holidays, my family and I attended a live magic show (for kids). And something the Magician said really spoke to me. Have you ever had a moment like that? You’re just living life and boom – along comes some inspiration! I love the ‘inspiration boom’ moments.

Anyhow, back to the magic show and the words that stuck. Here I was sitting in the auditorium laughing out loud and enjoying the show as much as the six, seven and eight year olds when all of a sudden the room grew quiet and the Magician said: “Don’t take your eyes off the red handkerchief … or you might miss the magic.”

I couldn’t help myself – my eyes were glued to the red handkerchief … I didn’t want to miss one second of the magic!

After the show ended, I made sure to jot down his great line and since that time I’ve reflected on why those words affected me so deeply.

Here’s my conclusion:
Don’t take your eyes off the red handkerchief has so many meanings … Our lives are like that red handkerchief and if we don’t pay attention to right now (and the people that matter, and the miracle of this day) – we will miss the magic that they have to offer.

This year, don’t miss the magic … stay focused on what matters most to you!

My heart grew 2 sizes today ...

With our little moments we can help make someone feel loved ...

There’s this little, old drug store in my town that I like to buy my postage stamps from. It’s not the closest mail stop by my house but I like it. I like the old feel to it and I like that it has an old-fashioned soda shop inside. I also like the fact that it’s a pharmacy and that the bulk of people that shop there are old. I love older people. I love what they know, where they have been and the stories they tell. And today, I met an older person who left footprints on my heart.

I was in a hurry – I had about 10 minutes before it was time to pick my daughter up from school. It was one of those run in and grab the stamps and dash back out trips. Only my dashing was slowed to a walk when I noticed that an older gentleman was right next to me as I hit the exit door and thought it would be a good idea to hold the door open for him as he was older, had a cane and was clutching a white paper bag holding (what I guessed was a prescription).

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed he didn’t walk through my open door but opened his own door instead. He said something like “Here we go.”

I reached my car and opened the door thinking I would just jump in and drive away. But as I was about to sit down, he asked me the following question: “Does this car get good gas mileage?”

So I didn’t get in the car – just stood holding the door open talking to the little, old man with the cane still clutching his white paper sack.

I yelled back: “Yes! I love this car – no problems, great gas mileage!”

He then replied: “My car has been good too.”

Parked next to my car was an old, green Ford Taurus. I smiled at him and realized he really wanted someone to talk to. Only I was in a pinch for time … my daughter was going to be out of school soon and I really needed to go get her.

I said the only thing that came to my mind: “I hope you have a very merry Christmas.”
He called back to me (by this time he was at his car): “The holidays are a hard time for me.”

My heart sunk. He removed his baseball cap and I could see lots of thick white hair on his head, his eyes glistened as he said: “I’m all alone. My people are gone.”

Oh, I wanted to run over and hug him. No one should be alone at Christmas.

I said: “I’m so sorry. That would be hard. I am so blessed and have my family here.”

He called back: “I grew up here. I’m all alone now – you think about that this holiday.”

I said the only thing that came to mind: “I hope you have a very nice Christmas … I mean that.”

He answered: “Thank you dear…” and tears were streaming down his face.
I drove away and let the tears run down mine. And all day I kept thinking … Wendy, you should have invited him for dinner. I even drove back by the store to see if perhaps he was still there so I could offer him a Christmas dinner invitation. No luck, no green Taurus. No little old man.

His words have stuck all day … and caused me to do some reflecting about the real meaning of Christmas. Christmas is about love, about slowing down and caring, it’s about reaching out and helping someone in need, it’s about taking time to listen and being a light for others around us.

I’m so glad I bumped into that gentleman today – our little moments reminded me that life is precious and the people around us are too.

This holiday season – slow down, listen, reach out and most of all share your love …

'Scooter Lightening' Returns

Back in the 50’s having a hot car was the thing. Remember the scene from “Grease” and all the guys are in the car shop singing about the car? Well, my son who is 12 loves his scooter as much as those T-birds loved their cars – maybe even more so. He doesn’t have an actual scooter shop to sing and dance around in but he does have a passion for making his scooter ultra cool. Every time I see his ultra scooter machine I start to sing: “Scooter Lightening” …

OK back to the present - If you visit my son’s room, you’ll notice a container filled with scooter parts, bolts, hand bars, extra grips and tools. Late at night you can see the light escaping from underneath his door and hear the sound of clunky parts hitting the floor … he’d rather work on that scooter than sleep, watch TV or sometimes eat.

I knew he loved his scooter but didn’t realize just how much until the day it was stolen. Let me set the scene: It was 3:35 on a hot Thursday in August. I stopped at the scooter park to pick him up. To my amazement, I was met by five 12-year olds all talking at the same time. One of them was talking to the 911 dispatcher while the rest of them were shouting (in my face) about the events that had just occurred. Kaleb was the only one not talking. He was trying to be calm and fight back the tears. I knew something was wrong. And after gathering all the information from the crowd in front of me – I realized his favorite object in the world had been ripped off. Or should I say scooted off? Bottom line – my son was devastated.

To make a long story short, I am happy to report that we were helped by a very wonderful Officer who after getting a statement from my son was able to capture the older boy and the scooter. We went down to the Police Station to reclaim the much cherished object.

To our surprise, the Officer had the sticky fingered Thief come out and meet us and apologize for his wrong doings. It was a moment I’ll never forget. I’m hoping he won’t forget it either.

The look on my son’s face was of total relief and gratitude. His friend – The Scooter had been returned.

As we drove home, we had a few moments to talk about the choices people make and the lasting impact that each choice can and does have. I couldn’t help but say: “Kaleb I hope you never steal – look how it makes people feel.” He looked at me and said: “You don’t have to worry mom, I’ll never do that to anyone – ever.” And I said: “I know.”

Thank heavens for the little moments in life that help us grow, learn and become.
And thank heavens that ‘scooter lightening’ is home safe and sound …

OWN your life!

The other day as I was reading through the topics in my online in-box, there was one from Oprah.com that caught my attention. I signed up for her newsletter years ago and most often don't have time to read them. Sometimes the topic is just too good to pass up. And such a topic grabbed my eye and I felt compelled to open it up. I can’t remember what it was specifically but the thing that does stand out is the clicking journey I went on once I entered the Oprah site.

Join me! (Imagine yourself on the Oprah site with me). Look up and off to the right of the screen ... see that link? The one that says: Do you want to have your own show? I clicked on it (out of curiosity) and found myself really wanting to create a 3 minute clip pitching my idea for a show. Apparently, Oprah is on a hunt for a person to host their own show.

Yup you guessed it. I pulled out my video equipment and began to shoot a few ‘takes’ of my idea for a show. My idea is this: (working show title) Live a life you LOVE (one moment at a time). As part of the show I would invite people to share their attempts at chasing down a dream. I don’t know about you but I find it incredibly inspiring when I see others taking action to make something that matters to them REAL. I would also include segments on overcoming fear. I truly believe that fear is the main reason so many of us don’t ever begin what it is we so want to do.
I have not sent my 3 minute film piece into Oprah – but I think I might. One thing I know for sure – the more attempts we make at something the more we learn and the closer we get to making it happen.

If we never try – we’ll never see anything happen. What are you working on? What are you learning as you try the ‘seemingly impossible’?

Thought for the road: Stand up and OWN your life. Own every part of it. If you don’t …someone or something else will. Take charge and live a life you LOVE.

Slow down and enjoy the 'puddle' moments!

Have you been busy lately? Maybe you’ve been beyond busy – (in case you are wondering) the beyond busy times are the times you don’t have time to slow down and even talk about how busy you are. I believe there are sometimes in our lives that are like that. There are the beyond busy days. And on those days or weeks or sometimes months we find ourselves thinking thoughts like this – Why did I say yes to so many things? How did I get this busy? I never dreamed it possible to have this kind of schedule. And the thoughts go on.

I found myself in one of those beyond busy day thought moments (I was driving) and just before I reached home I saw a beautiful sight that caused me to slow down (almost to a stop).
There on the corner just before my house was an adorable bird splashing and playing in a puddle. I started to laugh and couldn’t believe how much fun the bird was having in that puddle. It was if that creature had just found bird heaven and couldn’t get enough of it.

Thanks to that little moment, I was reminded of the need and importance of finding the ‘puddles’ in our everyday lives that can add so much fun, renewal and energy to our days. The puddles are all around us – we just need to slow down to recognize and enjoy them!
As soon as I reached home, I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote: Slow down and enjoy the ‘puddle’ moments!

Don’t you love the little things around us (like a bird splashing in a puddle) that help remind us to enjoy life and all it has to offer? They are real – just like the busy days and it feels good to know that we can choose to slow down and splash, laugh, dance and even write ourselves a reminder note if we want.

Cheers to the little moments that matter and puddles along the way…

Dream BIG!

I bumped into this quote earlier this week and just love it! :) Thought you might too ...

If there were ever a time to dare,
to make a difference,
to embark on something worth doing, it is now.

Not for any grand cause, necessarily-but for something that tugs at your heart,
something that's your aspiration,
something that's your dream.

You owe it to yourself to make your days here count.
Have fun.
Dig deep.
Stretch.
Dream big.

Invite Happiness IN

Invite –
To request the presence or participation of
in a kindly or courteous way

Dear Happiness,
I invite you to join me today
in all my little moments!
(Try saying that out loud!)

How did that feel? Have you ever simply invited happiness in? Happiness is a sensitive creature it comes and goes (in most people’s lives.) I believe many of us have forgotten how to treat ‘happiness’! I like to think of happiness as a dear friend. And without her, my life would be quite empty and dull.

Close your eyes and picture in your mind someone who is very dear and special to you. How do you feel when you think of this person? Now picture yourself without this person in your life. It’s probably a hard thing to imagine!

That’s how I think of happiness! I can’t imagine life without it! So, in order to keep it and have it – I must treat it special. And my little, unique and creative way to do that is to simply invite her to join me all the time!
(I think ‘happiness’ likes that and is more apt to stay.)

This little moment matters –
Here’s the invitation I use (feel free to borrow it – or make your own!) You may want to post this around your home or in the car.

Dear ‘Happiness’,
You are invited to join me in my journey called LIFE!
When – Always!
Where – Everywhere!
Time – 24/7
Place – My home, my heart, my LIFE!
Thank you!
I’m so glad you’re part of my little moments.
Love,
(Your name here.)
